Media Minute:
This week, I read “Now We Will Be Happy” by Amina Gautier. It’s short story narratives bring light to the Afro-Puerto Rican Diasporic identities that exist. Each story defines the uniqueness and complexity of Puerto Rican Identities. This book has easily become a favorite of mine. The first story, Aguanile, recounts the estranged relationship that a granddaughter is forced to mediate in her family. Each detail brought me closer to tears as I felt my own similarities that connected my family dynamics to the written word. Ironically, I read the first chapter in the last hours of Father’s Day, making the personal connection to my family that much stronger. If that was not a cosmic wake up call from the ancestors, then the cover of the book featuring a bodega was. The detailed storefront is named La Esperanza, The Hope, and my Maternal Grandmother’s name. This book became an immediate favorite for me.
